BHUBANESWAR: To open assortment centres for the Swachhata Kendra that will come up at the Temporary Transit Station (TTS) close to Sainik School for the number of plastic waste in 10 wards, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will get started figuring out land from Monday.
The BMC has signed an MoU with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages for plastic waste processing in the town. "The size of the land for the collection centres will depend on the size of the population of the ward. So, basically, the land dimension will be in proportion to the quantity of waste generated," stated BMC commissioner Subham Saxena.
All 10 assortment centres taken together will deal with 6,800 metric tonne of waste plastic in four years. "They will keep the city clean and help woman entrepreneurs generate livelihood. In the process, around 700 Safai Sathi (waste-pickers) will be engaged," Saxena stated. "The collection centres will act as waste banks," he added.
The Swachhata Kendra close to the TTS might be set up over 6,000 sq. feet. The plastic waste generated from the gathering centres will go to the Kendra.
