Bima Koregaon anniv observed at 'Vijay Stambh'

PUNE: Over masses of folks on Tuesday visited the Vijay Stambh (War Memorial) near Perne village here to mark the 201st anniversary of the Bima-Koregaon combat.
Amidst heavy safety, an event was once organised at nighttime to commemorate 201 years of the combat. Thousands of tourists paid their tribute on the memorial and a unique 'puja' was once additionally organised during the evening.


The visitors paid their respects on the Victory Pillar which was once decked up with colorful lighting fixtures and flora.


In the combat, which was once fought between the British East India Company, containing Dalits in its infantry, and the Peshwas, who had been upper-caste Brahmins, at Koregaon Bhima on January 1, 1818, the Marathas in the end withdrew. Since then, members of various communities have been viewing it as a symbolic victory for themselves.


On the 200th celebrations of the similar, violence spilled over to adjoining portions of Maharashtra after clashes broke out between the Dalits and alleged right-wing teams on January 1, during the bicentenary party of the Bhima-Koregaon combat.


The right-wing teams had been objecting to the observance of 'Victory Day' since they considered it as an anti-national party. Also, both RSS and BJP had been being accused of instigating the violence via opposition leaders.
