Chennai: 2 lawyers booked for abusing cops

CHENNAI: Two days after a video of two lawyers threatening policemen at the metropolitan Justice of the Peace court in Egmore went viral, police on Friday booked them for criminal intimidation.

An FIR was once registered towards lawyers Anandababu and Vijayakumar, in line with a grievance from Mahesh Kumar, an armed reserve police constable.

Around 3pm on Wednesday, 32 police constables have been on guard of 26 prisoners who have been introduced from the Puzhal prison. The lawyers chatted with the prisoners. But after they had bodily touch with the prisoners, the policemen stopped them, saying it was once no longer allowed.

In a controversy that ensued, two lawyers began hurling abuses at the policemen and said they'd all the rights to talk to the prisoners. When a constable started filming the act on his cellular, one of the two lawyers threatened to damage his phone and persevered to ridicule the policemen. Soon, a gaggle of lawyers pacified them and took them away.

One of the constables, Mahesh Kumar, lodged a grievance with the Egmore police, who booked the lawyers for criminal intimidation, assault on a public servant and verbal abuse.

With the assistance of the recorded video, the lawyers have been known.
