BMC officials on toes ahead of Swachh team's visit

MUMBAI: Unlike earlier years when the BMC would be told prematurely about the arrival of Swachh Survekshan inspectors, this 12 months it will be a surprise consult with. Therefore, all BMC officials had been told to be in a position for an undercover inspection through assessors, which might happen any day earlier than January 31. Last 12 months, Mumbai was ranked 18 among India’s cities within the national survey but was given the name of the cleanest state capital, drawing complaint from some quarters at the grounds that the city’s hygiene and sanitation standards continued to be as deficient as ever.

Till closing 12 months, BMC officials would take the assessors, sent through the Union ministry of housing and concrete affairs (which conducts the survey), around, without reference to the location: whether a slum or a high-rise. Another difference this 12 months is that survey carries 5,000 marks, 1,000 more than in 2018. “Of this, 1,250 marks will be for direct observation through the assessors. This would include segregation and processing of waste through bulk generators (motels, big housing societies, etc) and small constructions as neatly,” stated a civic reliable.

Sometime ago, the BMC gave itself a three-star ranking (on a scale of 7) within the self-assessment class. The superstar ranking protocol contains elements corresponding to cleanliness of drains and water bodies, plastic waste management, and managing development and demolition waste, that are essential drivers for achieving garbage-free cities.

The measures the BMC administration is taking to ensure that the surprise consult with through Swachh Survekshan assessors passes without incident are commendable. One hopes that the civic body would stay similarly alert right through the 12 months to ensure that Mumbai doesn’t remain the ‘cleanest state capital’ most effective on paper.

Corporator Rais Shaikh, who's the opposition Samajwadi Party chief within the BMC, stated that for a town with massive financial assets, a three superstar ranking is just too low. “Unlike many other cities, our civic body can give required infrastructure for adequate waste segregation. But this is not being executed.”
