Lion safari to stay closed for five more days

MOHALI: The lion safari at Chhatbir zoo will stay closed for any other 5 days till the work to finish the visibility of the enclosure from the boundary wall is finished. The safari has been closed since two lions mauled a person to death when he scaled the 25-ft wall and jumped into the realm on January 20.

Zoo field director M Sudhagar said the work to fix metal sheets at the wire-mesh to finish visibility is being undertaken on the Ghaggar river aspect of the lion safari. He said, "The lion safari may not be thrown open for the public for five more days. We expect the work to be completed by Thursday. We will submit a report to chief conservator forests Kuldeep Kumar and the decision to open the safari for public will be taken then. The deer safari will be open for the public from Tuesday."

He said till the lion safari is open, best fees for deer safari shall be taken. Earlier, it was once a mixed price ticket of Rs 75 for lion and deer safaris, with Rs 50 for lion. Now, guests should pay Rs 25 just for deer safari.


On Sunday, the pair of lions, Shilpa and Yuvraj, who had mauled the man to death, have been launched in the safari to check their behaviour. Sudhagar said, "We released Shilpa and Yuvraj on Saturday and Sunday under the observation of experts. Their behaviour was found to be normal. We also made some employees board a bus and got to the safari. The lions did not behave abnormally." "We will also make other zoo employees go to the safari as visitors and check the behaviour of lions while they watch buses," said Sudhagar. He said the lions are also having their food generally.


The lions had protested and refused to take food when they have been despatched into captivity earlier than their customary time agenda at the day of the incident on January 20. The lions have been locked at 3.20 pm on that day, while generally they are taken out of the safari at five pm.


The 35-year-old sufferer have been known as Jata Shanker of Motipur in Uttar Pradesh. He was once a affected person of despair and a father of two children.
