Mahapanchayat today to settle dues of cane farmers

AMBALA: The Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) and Kisan Sangharsh Samiti have called for a ‘mahapanchayat’ outside Naraingarh sugar mill on Wednesday, to press for action towards the unit for not liberating the payments of sugarcane farmers.

The mill at Banondi village in Shahzadpur has not paid farmers of the Naraingarh area nearly Rs 24 crore for 2017-18 season, and nearly Rs 70 crore for the continued 2018-19 season, the farmer our bodies stated on Tuesday.

BKU Haryana president Gurnam Singh Charuni stated, “The Haryana government has given the subsidy of Rs 16 in line with quintal to all sugar mills within the state. There are 14 sugar mills in all, out of which 12 have gained the federal government subsidy. But the federal government has not launched the subsidy to Bhadson and Naraingarh mills as they are defaulting at the cost of government loans. The mill in Naraingarh is deducting Rs 16 in line with quintal from farmers’ cost and the federal government has already notified the SAP (state advisory price) of Rs 340 in line with quintal for the early number of sugarcane. On Wednesday, the matter shall be mentioned in entrance of farmers, management and mill management. And, if we don't seem to be pacified, a protest shall be staged outside the mill.”

A senior office-bearer of the Naraingarh mill informed TOI , “The government has allowed us time up to September 2020 to transparent our outstandings and it has additionally agreed to provide us subsidy. At present, cost of nearly Rs 22 crore of the sugarcane farmers is pending.”

“Out of this, nearly Rs 11 crore in government subsidy and nearly Rs 7 crore for our electrical energy production are pending at the government facet. The cost of the present season shall be launched as soon as the federal government notifies the sugarcane SAP. The subsidy of Rs 16 in line with quintal shall be directly transferred to accounts of farmers by way of the federal government, subsequently we're liberating payments after adjusting accordingly. We expected the federal government to unencumber our subsidy and the electrical energy production payments by way of December 31 (2018). Since it has not came about, the payments to farmers may take some more time,” he claimed.

Naraingarh sub-divisional Justice of the Peace Aditi stated, “The Naraingarh mill had a deadline of December 31, 2018, to transparent all of the pending payments of farmers.”
