Merkel calls summit to discuss Germany's coal exit: Report

BERLIN: German news mag Der Spiegel studies that Chancellor Angela Merkel plans to discuss efforts to wean the rustic off coal with senior officials this month.
Spiegel reported on Saturday that Merkel has invited governors from 4 coal-producing German states to the chancellery for a gathering on Jan 15.

The date is set two weeks ahead of an expert committee is expected to ship a file on when and the way Germany should stop burning coal to generate electrical energy.

Germany not too long ago closed its last black coal mines, but continues to extract and burn lignite , a dirtier and cheaper form of coal.

Recent figures show Germany produced extra electrical energy from renewable assets than from coal for the first time last year.

Scientists say coal use has to end by means of 2050 to curb world warming.
