Mother-daughter duo held for conning 30 women

MUMBAI: A 22-year-old woman and her mother were just lately arrested for dishonest round 30 housewives from the western suburbs on the pretext of getting them quick personal loans. The accused charged processing fees from each victim. They boasted of getting contacts with a moneylender from Andheri who would organize for disbursal of the loans. The police investigations published that no such moneylender existed. The quantity conned has gone upto Rs 15 lakh up to now and is expected to increase as more complainants approach the police.

The accused, Puja Chaugule, and her mother, Sunita, are living at Kranti Nagar in Kandivali East. A category X passout with no earlier crime history, Puja was the mastermind of this fraud.

As sufferers began hounding her for their cash, Puja and Sunita had to change houses a dozen times-- from Kandivali to Nalasopara and then to Naigaon.


Malati Vishwakarma, a Kandivali housewife, was defrauded the most. "I had spent a large sum for my daughter's wedding. When an acquaintance told met the Chaugules could get quick personal loans, I got interested. This was three years ago," Vishwakarma mentioned.


Vishwakarma first of all paid Rs 10,000 and was promised a loan of Rs three lakh but she by no means got back a single rupee. "I ended up paying the Chaugules Rs 5 lakh over three years. Everytime I would approach Puja for the loan, she would pretend to call the moneylender and tell me to wait for sometime. I have ended up mortgaging my house and selling off all my jewellery to raise funds," she mentioned.


"We trusted them blindly and gave copies of our documents such as Aadhaar card and Pan card for availing loans. Puja has put together a large file containing our photos and documents," mentioned Janki Bharti, every other Kandivali housewife who was cheated of Rs 1.72 lakh mentioned her family was furious with her as all their savings were burnt up. "When victims started hounding her, Puja handed over cheques to some people. But the cheques got dishonoured," Bharti added.


Last Monday, citizens of Kandivali's Hanuman Nagar gheraoed Chaugule and her mother and dragged them to the Kurar police station. After a preliminary probe, the police arrested the duo on dishonest charges.
