NGT imposes Rs 100 crore fine on Meghalaya govt for failing to curb illegal mining

NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal on Friday imposed a wonderful of whopping Rs 100 crore at the Meghalaya government for failing to curb unlawful coal mining in the state.

A senior advocate, who's aiding the tribunal as an amicus curiae in the mining topic, stated a record of a high-level committee was submitted on January 2 before a bench headed by NGT chairperson A K Goel.

The record mentioned that majority of the mines in the state have been working without a hire or licence.

The NGT imposed Rs 100 crore wonderful at the state government as a "deterrent" and for its "inaction" to curb unlawful mining in the north eastern state.

The lawyer stated all over the listening to, the state government admitted that numerous mines have been working illegally.


At least 15 miners are trapped in the 370 foot-deep unlawful coal mine in Lumthari village of East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya since December 13 and all efforts to pump the water out of flooded mine were in useless.


The proprietor of the unlawful rat-hole mine Krip Chullet was arrested at the evening of December 14.


The state government has spent kind of over Rs 50 lakh for hiring quite a lot of utilities to rescue the trapped miners.


On Thursday, the Supreme Court had expressed sturdy dissatisfaction over the rescue efforts to trace the miners and had requested the state government to bring them out dead or alive.
