Sand mining even damaged aqueduct of Narmada canal

VADODARA: Letting out sand lease in Orsang River have contributed to government exchequer in type of royalties, however the rampant mining actions have also posed danger to the aqueduct of Narmada main canal that crosses over the river in Bodeli.

Sand mining had larger the depth of the river bed, exposing the foundation piles of the aqueduct. The depth of riverbed had larger because of which one of the foundation pillars had been even broken remaining year. Following rains within the region remaining year, the riverbed had further reduced because the contemporary water within the river had eroded the soil.


The Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) had then requested Gujarat Engineering Research Institute to adopt study concerning the feasibility of creating a weir or boulder wall within the riverbed to give protection to the aqueduct from any harm. SSNNL had undertaken soil filling as a short-term measure. However, as an everlasting solution SSNNL is mulling to construct a weir or wall at the downstream of the river.
