Varanasi: Boatmen’s strike hits New Year festivity

VARANASI: The ongoing strike of boatmen entered the 5th day, affecting the New Year celebrations at banks of the Ganga on Tuesday.

The boatmen are protesting in opposition to the cruise operators gathering passengers from a couple of issues like Assi Ghat.


While the ghats alongside river Ganga as well as jetties remained flooded with revellers, the river circulate as well as the sand bed on reverse financial institution wore a deserted glance.


Due to unavailability of boats in the Ganga other websites together with Sarnath, public parks and multiplexes remained overcrowded.


Several rounds of talks with district Justice of the Peace Surendra Singh and officials didn't convince the boatmen to name off their strike. They blocked the waterway in river Ganga to disrupt the movement of cruise boat on Monday night.


The leaders of boatmen Pramod Majhi and Shambhu Sahani said that the strike will proceed until they get a written assurance by means of the district management to stop cruise operators from gathering passengers from a couple of issues.
