Vizhinjam port: Shortage of rocks hit breakwater works

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated in the Assembly that the corporate putting in place Vizhinjam seaport has made it transparent that there would be extend in building of the port. Acute shortage of rocks has affected breakwater works.
As in line with the agreement the Adani Group of companies have to finish the first segment of the work by means of December 3, 2019. But they have got sought any other 16 months’ time to finish the work.

Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited has refused this request of the impartial engineer, the CM stated in reply to questions from MLAs T V Ibrahim, N Shamsuddin, Abid Hussain Thangal, Ok Ansalan and S Sarma.

As a part of the first segment development works, building of berths, container yards and putting in place of breakwaters are occurring. But there's acute shortage of rocks which has delayed the crowning glory of works for breakwaters.

The dredging and reclamation work, which was stopped following Ockhi crisis, was resumed in December. However, work is progressing at a slow tempo. Hence, the impartial engineer who has been appointed to supervise the development in work has knowledgeable that there would be extend at first of building of the port.

The leader minister stated that when in each and every two weeks the port secretary is reviewing the work development. Also, the mission implementation committee headed by means of the chief secretary is reviewing development.

As in line with the estimate there's a requirement for 70 lakh tonnes of rocks for the construction of breakwaters. However, the corporate is unable to source the rocks from the state.


As in line with the agreement the corporate which is putting in place the port has to source the rocks and it isn't the duty of the government. Since the corporate has sought the assistance of the government to source the rocks, the government has intervened in the problem.


There is an attempt to convey the rocks from Maharashtra. In addition to this the corporate itself has come ahead for locating quarries from where they can source the rocks. All district collectors have been asked to help in figuring out quarries from where the rocks may also be sourced.


The Konkan Railway Corporation has been awarded with the works for connecting a rail line with the Vizhinjam port. For this a draft survey and an in depth mission record has been finished by means of the corporation. The executive is at present bearing in mind the DPR and as soon as it gets sanction the land acquisition process will start, stated the chief minister.
