Weavers fear defaulting on loan for imported machines

SURAT: Nearly 1,500 powerloom weavers in the city concern losing their high-end imported machinery as the central government has no longer reimbursed Rs 300 crore subsidy amount beneath the Amended Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (ATUFS) since last three years.
Powerloom weavers said that 1,500 information are pending for subsidy approval at the textile commissioner’s administrative center beneath the ATUFS for 10% subsidy. The weavers had ordered machinery from foreign international locations for taking benefit of the subsidy. However, the government is but to release the subsidy amount due to which majority of the weavers are dealing with difficulties in paying the bank instalments.

The Federation of Gujarat Weavers Welfare Association (FOGWA) has demanded that the textile commissioner’s administrative center must behavior an open area in Surat to resolve the grievances of the powerloom weavers who are but to get the subsidy disbursement.


President of FOGWA, Ashok Jirawala said, “More than 1,500 subsidy information of the weavers are held up for subsidy disbursal citing minor mistakes like the mismatch of the dates of machinery import invoice and bank mortgage sanction, mistake in writing serial quantity and device quantity in the invoice etc. The weavers have taken loans price crores of rupees and now they are finding it tough to pay the instalment amount due to non-disbursement of subsidy amount from past three years.”


Jirawala added, “We have demanded that the joint inspection crew consisting of textile association, MANTRA, textile commissioner’s administrative center must resolve the technical problems at the earliest via establishing open area in the city. Out of the 7,000 information submitted for subsidy beneath ATUFS, only 70 has been authorized for disbursal across the country.”


Powerloom business leader, Ashish Gujarati said, “It is a double hassle for the weaving sector. On one hand we are not getting the utilisation of collected enter tax credit score (ITC), on the different the government is not approving the subsidy amount working into crores of rupees.”
