Women cops get self-defence tips from LA girl

KOLKATA: On Thursday, Shibpur Police Lines flooring in Howrah was an open-air lecture room for 160-odd girls cops, who took pointers at the nuances of self-defence from a 20-year outdated taekwondo professional from Los Angeles. A believer in gender equality, Pooja Nagpal, who has been donning the teacher’s hat for the past 11 days, feels the cops will emerge more potent and extra confident after the educational, which ends up on January eight.


In 2012, the Nirbhaya rape case had left Nagpal, then a 14-year-old kid, shaken. A second-degree black belt in taekwondo, she returned to India the next 12 months to show girls the techniques of self-defence and began off from a small village in Himachal Pradesh. Since then, there has been no having a look again. She stored returning to India all the way through her college breaks every year to empower extra girls.

“Ever since I enrolled for varsity, I have not been ready to come back again on account of instructional assignments, projects and seminars. I am glad that I am again after two years to do what I really like — train girls to give protection to themselves,” the student of electrical engineering and computer science at Berkeley University instructed TOI.


After teaching girls in north Indian states, this time she selected Bengal on account of her father Pawan Nagpal’s Bengal connection. Nagpal senior is an alumnus of IIT-Kharagpur. She was once given the go-ahead straight away after she approached the Howrah Police commissioner with the voluntary coaching programme proposal.


Nagpal doesn’t mind travelling over 20km day-to-day from New Town, where she is putting up at a relative’s position, to Shibpur Police Lines for the educational classes. “Teaching the cops is more straightforward as they're extra disciplined and receptive. My categories earlier were with college youngsters and ladies from villages,” she mentioned.


In May 2018, some cops, together with girls, were injured when a conflict broke out at Howrah’s Kazipara after they tried to prevent individuals of a political birthday party from marching to Nabanna. “When we go for law-and-order responsibility, the public, mostly men, assume that ladies cops are unnecessary in terms of bodily power. During the educational, I realized that it isn't bodily power that makes one sturdy. We want to be more potent mentally as neatly, and this I have learnt from the educational,” mentioned constable Archana Majhi, who has been in provider for 6 years.
