Cash-strapped? NMC to spend 1.25 crore on 99th drama festival

Nagpur: At a time when municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar has imposed a 30% reduce on annual finances from January 1 bringing up civic body’s looming financial crisis, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to offer Rs1.25 crore for the 99th Akhil Bharatiya Natya Sammelan being organized through Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad from February 22 to 25.
Terming the event as prestigious for the city, the NMC will use this cash to construct level, erect pandals, beautification, sound gadget, lighting, and many others at two venues — Dadasaheb Dhanwate Nagar Vidyalaya, Reshimbagh ground and Suresh Bhatt auditorium, Reshimbagh, states a suggestion submitted through NMC’s sports and cultural department to general body meeting slated for February 20.

Renowned playwright, poet and author, Premanand Gajvi, is the chairman of the All India Marathi Natya Sammelan, while Union minister and city MP Nitin Gadkari will preside over the function, the proposal said. Apart from Rs1.25 crore lend a hand, the NMC will also provide the auditorium for the event free of value. As this is a coverage choice, it has to be authorized through standing committee and forward the same to the overall body.

Besides this, the civic management will also submit 8 other proposals including NMC reclaiming Ambazari lawn and adjacent 42.42 acre from MTDC. Citing MTDC’s failure to increase the lawn after it was once passed over through the NMC on January 30, the dep. now plans to seek rent of all of the space from the state executive.

The NMC’s secretariat department too has submitted a suggestion to finish the tenure of 8 contributors from the 13-member standing committee. Early this month, the standing panel has given its nod to finish the tenure of 8 contributors — 5 from ruling BJP, two Congress and one BSP corporators — whose term will finish on March 1, 2019.

The shipping department will seek GB’s nod to empower the civic leader to appoint contractors for e-rickshaw, bicycle, e-cycle, e-scooter, e-car for closing mile connectivity.

The public works department of Mangalwari zone has submitted a suggestion for sporting out street works in prabhag numbers 11 and 12 at a value of Rs1.24 crore. Under this head, the civic body has gained Rs62.49 crore from annual district plan for the current financial yr.
