Citizenship bill opposers block rail tracks in four districts

GUWAHATI: Railway carrier in the region used to be affected during the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) ‘rail roko’ protests in the state challenging fast scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. The protesters staged railway blockade program at quite a lot of places of Nalbari, Tinsukia, Lakhimpur and Udalguri districts. Movements of a minimum of 10 trains had been affected.
Pranav Jyoti Sharma, chief public members of the family officer (CPRO) of Northeast Frontier Railway, here mentioned, “Movements of some 10 trains including Delhi certain Brahmaputra Mail, Naharlagun – Guwahati Shatabdi Express and Naharlagun – New Tinsukia Express suffered delays because of the railway blockades.”

All the affected trains suffered delays ranging between 15 minutes to greater than an hour. Normal running of trains used to be restored after withdrawal of blockade, he added.

Since morning hours, masses of AJYCP protesters at quite a lot of places sat on the railway tracks and stated the blockades. Slogans like ‘Joi Aai Axom’, ‘We oppose CAB’ rocked the protests sites of Tinsukia, Nalbari, Udalguri, and Lakhimpur and so on. At


At Nalbari, Tinsukia, Harisinga in Udalguri, Harmuti in Lakhimpur, protesters blocked the railway tracks for greater than an hour and demanded chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to behave in opposition to the passing of the bill in Rajya Sabha. In Udalguri protesters had been half bare.


AJYCP basic secretary Palash Changmai mentioned, “We warn the federal government to abstain from passing the CAB or to stand large protests in the region. Both state and Centre has been trying to impose the Bill upon us when the folks of the region has obviously rejected it.”


The state has been unrest since Prime Minister Narendra Modi had introduced to usher in the CAB to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who had entered India prior to December 31, 2014. Protesters demanded that the identity of illegal foreigners in the state will have to be based on the Assam Accord cutoff date of March 25, 1971.
