Coimbatore police draw flak for interrogating minor sexual abuse victim

COIMBATORE: Members of the All India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA) on Friday condemned the cops, who carried out an inquiry with a four-year-old sexual abuse sufferer at the Thudiyalur police station, in violation of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

“As in keeping with the Act, youngsters will have to neither be referred to as for inquiry to police stations nor interrogated by way of uniformed cops. But on this case, the norms had been obviously violated,” vice-president of AIDWA U Vasuki mentioned.

Police had arrested R Govindaraj, a van motive force and his helper A Marimuthu, who had been working at a non-public faculty on the outskirts of the town on February 1 for sexually abusing the sufferer within the car.

“We were asking for police to incorporate section five(f) of POCSO Act that mandates 10 years imprisonment to the accused. But the officers have not performed it so far. We are not satisfied with the best way the town police have dealt the case. To scale back the violence in opposition to women and youngsters, the superintendent of police will have to come forward to conduct interactive sessions between cops and ladies activists where such problems might be mentioned,” Vasuki mentioned.

Monthly discussions between police and ladies activists had been carried out in Chennai in accordance with central govt instructions until a few years in the past, she mentioned. “Also, the district collector will have to make sure that interior court cases committee is shaped for ladies staff to sign in court cases touching on sexual harassments at workplaces.”
