Fire destroys 50 acres of forest in tiger reserve buffer zone

UDHAGAMANDALAM: A major hearth in the buffer zone of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) in the Nilgiris destroyed at least 50 acres of forest land on Saturday evening.
About 300 firefighters, together with forest officers and volunteers, were struggling to control the hearth that unfold to Mayar, Masinagudi, Marganbetta, Achakarai and Bokkapuram.

A crew of forest division team of workers from the MTR were aiding the Karnataka forest division to extinguish a big hearth in the adjoining Bandipur Tiger Reserve (BTR) on Saturday once they were alerted concerning the hearth on home turf.

The division suspects it to be man-made. “Fire breaking out concurrently in five different spaces, that too deep within the forest, is something very odd. We suspect the involvement of anti-social parts,” MTR deputy director Pushpakaran advised TOI.


No injury to natural world was reported, the respectable said. “Since closing evening, all our team of workers are fighting the hearth with out taking a break. In Marganbetta space, even after hanging out the hearth closing evening, it broke out again.”


Strong wind in the hills favours hearth to unfold temporarily to the neighbouring space. Also, dried-up lantana and grass catch hearth easily.


The division has announced a praise of Rs 10, 000 for someone, who supplies tip-offs concerning the miscreants accountable for the hearth.
