RAJKOT: Crop failure is riding increasingly more farmers of Saurashtra to dedicate suicide. In the latest incident, another farmer has ended his lifestyles in Tajpar village of Lathi taluka in Amreli district, taking the toll of farmers to 26.
According to police, the deceased, known as Natha Barad (60), had ate up pesticide on January 31, however he died throughout treatment at Sir T Hospital in Bhavnagar on Wednesday evening.
“Barad’s son Vanraj stated that Barad had 7 bigha land on which he had cultivated cotton. However, the crop failed due to poor monsoon this 12 months. As he was not ready to pay the debt, he took the drastic step,” stated N D Goswami, head constable with Lathi police station.
Barad is survived through his wife and 3 sons, who paintings as farm labourers. He had taken a mortgage from the agricultural co-operative society of Tajpar village.
With Barad’s death, the toll of farmers has fastened to 26 in Saurashtra since September 2018. Of the suicides, seven have been reported from Amreli district, 5 from Devbhoomi Dwarka district, 4 from Surendranagar district, three every from Rajkot and Junagadh district and two from Porbandar.
One suicide every was reported from Jamnagar and Bhavnagar districts.
