Lathicharge on differently-abled to be probed

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra govt on Tuesday introduced an inquiry into the incident during which differently-abled youth had been lathicharged in Pune on Monday. The inquiry will likely be finished in seven days and those found guilty will likely be suspended, said junior minister for home Rajit Patil.

Even as the incident led to an enormous uproar throughout sections of the society, the state govt said that the police had to hotel to 'gentle' lathicharge after the protestors had been looking to push the barricades.

"There were 1000-1100 protestors and some of them were trying to push the barricades and to stop them from doing so, the police had to resort to mild lathicharge," said Patil.

He said that within the incident, two protestors and 5 police officials sustained minor injuries and had been give adequate treatments and despatched home.

However, the opposition criticised the federal government's motion and when put next the Pune police to General Dyer. "While Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked differently- abled people to be treated with respect, such an inhuman treatment meted out to the students says a lot about what is being followed," said Congress MLA Jaykumar Gore.

Leader of the opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said that the federal government will have to apologise for the incident and will have to first suspend the police officials and then conduct an inquiry into the incident.

Meanwhile, minister for social justice Rajkumar Badole said that the demands of the protestors are being met. "There are five higher secondary schools in the state for the differently-abled and two more are being set up," said Badole.

He said suggestions from the representatives of the differently-abled would be taken into consideration whilst appointing a reliable authority to control such faculties.
