Tirupur: Even 15 years after the opening of the new bus stand at Perumanallur, many retail outlets in the facility stay unoccupied, affecting revenues to the town corporation.
To overcome this, the corporation had decided to redevelop the bus stand beneath the Smart City challenge and lately finished the tendering process for the venture at a price of Rs 29.eight crore. “Under the challenge, we now have deliberate to broaden a mini shopping mall, multilevel car parking facility, modernize the existing amenities, and allot separate bays to town buses in the terminus,” a senior corporation reliable said.
The bus terminus, which is located clear of the town centre in the northern part of the town, has 120 retail outlets. Of these, about 70 retail outlets stay unoccupied and round 15 retail outlets don't seem to be generating earnings regardless of being taken up for leases, some other corporation reliable said. Many vacant retail outlets act as temporary abode to armed reserve police team of workers from different districts.
Shopkeepers said the location was once mainly on account of poor trade. “As many of the buses operated from the terminus are to southern districts, it sees crowd handiest right through festive seasons. Many passengers get down ahead of buses succeed in the terminus. Besides, no town buses enter the terminus. They prevent out of doors the facility,” V Suresh, one of the shopkeepers, said.

Besides, loss of basic amenities like free toilets, consuming water is affecting passengers.” He also alleged that the many of the retail outlets were allocated to politicians, who sublet them to others and pocket the money.
