Coimbatore: Unlike the fancy remote-controlled vehicles you buy from fancy shops, those built by means of engineering students for a remote-controlled car racing tournament in the town on Friday had no shiny body to cover the interior combustion engines, coated in grease and mud.
Ten teams from engineering faculties throughout Tamil Nadu, who participated in the Nitro RC Racingorganized as a part of Yugaman annual inter-college techno cultural competition of Kumaraguru College of Technology, had spent up to Rs 1lakh each to make the vehicles.

“Most of the vehicles had been designed and built by means of the scholars. The tournament was carried out to test the mechanical talents and skill of the future engineers,” mentioned Ok Akilan, pupil president of the Mechanical division of the college.

To take a look at the stability of the vehicles, the participants needed to entire 3 rounds of 250m races, stuffed with hurdles.

The tournament gave a chance to learn the ideas of mechanics and increase talents better than a study room, mentioned S Sri Ranganthan, a member of the workforce from the College of Engineering, Guindy. “It took us one-and-a-half years to build the car. But, we noticed a number of errors and are running on to mend them,” he advised TOI. “We had spent Rs 1lakh to procure the interior parts. We will want more cash to upgrade it. We hope to do so with the prize amount.”

U Aravind Kumar from Sri Krishna College of Technology mentioned his workforce changes the design of their car based on the terrain the place the contest is held.
