Want CBI inquiry into deaths: Former CM Tarun Gogoi

GUWAHATI: Ahead of Rahul Gandhi's Assam discuss with on Tuesday, Congress has introduced a scathing assault on the state govt for its 'failure' in combating the hooch tragedy.

Demanding a CBI probe into the incident, senior Congress leader and previous leader minister Tarun Gogoi accused the BJP-led govt of permitting unlawful liquor dens to flourish within the state. "The state government is to be blamed for the tragedy. They did not take steps to stop the sale of spurious liquor even after women's organizations alerted the Golaghat district administration two years ago."


He added, "The state government, instead of curbing sale of liquor, decided to give more licenses for enhancing excise revenue after coming to power. A government which wants to increase the number of drunkards has no moral right to be in power for a single day," said Gogoi. He alleged that families of the deceased are suffering to collect firewood for cremation in Jorhat because of govt apathy.


Congress, which is gearing as much as make Rahul's rally in Guwahati a 'grand success' by way of bringing in over one lakh birthday celebration staff, is going to make the hooch tragedy a major issue for cornering the federal government. Party in-charge for Assam Harish Rawat said Tuesday's rally within the town will mirror the mood of the folk forward of the coming Lok Sabha elections.


"The rally will give a momentum to winds of change blowing in the country. The mood of Assam and the northeast for embracing this change will be evident. People want to see an end to the injustice of the BJP-led governments in the northeast. They are enthusiastic to see Rahul Gandhi replacing Narendra Modi," said Rawat, whilst addressing the media within the town.
