Banned poly bags continue to kill stray cattle

MOHALI: All efforts of Mohali Municipal Corporation to ban sale and use of polythene baggage in the town haven't helped. The polythene is getting used with impunity in more than a few markets, especially in kisan mandis in Mohali.

Recently, a case of dying of 280 atypical stray farm animals was once highlighted in Mohali and post-mortem of 10 atypical farm animals published that the reason for dying was once due to over the top consumption of polythene baggage. The post-mortem report published that the stomach of stray farm animals contained massive quantity of polythene at the side of blades, plastics and other sharp-edged kitchen pieces.

Stray cows and bulls may also be observed on town roads, chewing on one thing from the open boxes and on the lookout for anything edible to survive. The urban rubbish in open dumps poses an actual danger to them because they ingest the entire bundle — plastic baggage and the leftovers. Over a period of time, this reasons a build-up of plastic of their stomachs, and their dying. The animals are demise, but nobody is bothered. There is a want to create awareness among other people regarding proper plastic disposal techniques to save surroundings and such animals.

The MC had banned the usage of polythene which stays on papers as the bans stand for usage, garage, manufacturing, distribution, recycling of polythene baggage and material fabricated from thermocol like disposable plates, glasses, cups and spoons. The MC has also adopted the notification issued by the Punjab government and then raids shall be performed to curb violators.

Till date, polythene baggage are getting used with impunity in Mohali, especially in kisan mandis and colonies falling under the MC prohibit. Reports have also been submitted with the MC regarding stray farm animals eating polythene littered in parks and roadside rubbish dumps.

MC commissioner Bhupinder Pal Singh stated, "The notification has been issued by the Punjab government and Mohali MC has adopted it. Now, we will carry out drives to challan those found violating the ban. It is also mandatory for the Swachh Survekshan survey to keep the city clean and polythene free. As far as death of the stray cattle at cattle pound is concerned, the inquiry is being conducted and action will be taken once the report is submitted."
