MUMBAI: Urmila Matondkar, who shot into reputation with the movie Rangeela, could also be set to add a splash of colour to the hustings. The Congress is more likely to field her in opposition to the BJP’s Gopal Shetty from the Mumbai North constituency. Besides being a movie big name, Matondkar (45) is known for taking over humanitarian reasons, particularly for underprivileged ladies and children.
Outgoing Mumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam, accompanied by means of Milind Deora, the new city party chief, showed that talks are on with the actor. “We had a brief meeting together with her. We have asked her to contest the Lok Sabha polls from North Mumbai,” Nirupam mentioned. The Congress leadership feels that Matondkar will settle for the party’s proposal and win by means of a huge margin. “We are certain, she's going to settle for. If she wins, she will probably be an asset for the Congress,” mentioned a senior Congress leader. In the recent previous, leading Marathi actors Shilpa Shinde and Asawari Joshi have joined the Congress.
Congress has been looking for a top profile candidate to take on Shetty. Initially, it was advised that either actor Raj Babbar or former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin would contest as Congress nominees, but each declined. Then there have been reviews that senior party leader Mahesh Chaturvedi can be fielded, but he too expressed his unwillingness.
In the 2014 polls, Shetty defeated Nirupam in Mumbai North by means of a margin of over 4.46 lakh votes, prompting the latter to scout for a secure constituency. Nirupam has now gained a goahead to contest from Mumbai North-West, once represented by means of the overdue Gurudas Kamat.
For a long time, Mumbai North was represented by means of veteran BJP leader Ram Naik, now governor of Uttar Pradesh. In the 2004 Lok Sabha polls, Naik was defeated by means of actor Govinda (Congress), who polled five.59 lakh votes in opposition to Naik’s five.11 lakh. In the 2009 polls, Naik was defeated by means of Nirupam by means of a slender margin. Nirupam polled 2.55 lakh votes in opposition to Naik’s 2.49 lakh. Following successive defeats in two common elections, Naik retired from electoral politics.
