Death toll from Dhaka tower fire jumps to 17: Official

DHAKA: A huge fire in a Dhaka workplace block has killed a minimum of 17 other people, an respectable said Thursday, with determined staff leaping to their deaths in the most recent primary inferno to hit the Bangladeshi capital.
"The death toll has risen to 17," Khurshid Alam, a fireplace service officer, instructed AFP, adding the toll may continue to upward push as rescue crews seek the torched construction.

" Similarly, three more male victims were declared dead on arrival by the doctors of United Hospital," Sazzadur Rahman Shuvo, a senior executive of the hospital, was quoted as saying through the paper after he showed the deaths.

Apart from 21 fire tenders, Bangladesh Air Force helicopters and Navy commandos had been despatched to the spot to douse the blaze.

The people who misplaced the existence had been among part a dozen people who jumped off from various flooring of the high-rise for protection, resulting in grave accidents, senior officers at the spot said.

While the true explanation why in the back of the blaze was now not known, eye witnesses and a central authority officer at the spot said that the fire broke out at the eight ground of the construction and later spread to the opposite parts.

However, fire service didn't comment on what led to the fire.

"Three units of Bangladesh Navy are working to tame the blaze. We have brought around 50 per cent of the fire under control,"Siraj, a Navy officer, said.

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director Abdullah Ibn Zaid said that three Bangladesh Air Force helicopters are helping the quest and rescue operations, in conjunction with groups from the Bangladesh Army and Navy.


"Many have taken safe haven at the roof and some are asking for rescue through home windows,” he said.


Several other people have already been rescued from the burning construction, officers said.


Last month a minimum of 70 other people had been killed and over 50 injured when a fast-moving fire swept through an condo buildings and chemical warehouses in Dhaka's congested Chawkbazar area.
