Girl’s death: Efficient handling of waste urged

BENGALURU: The loss of life of a three-year-old lady, who fell into a waste pile set afire at Shivajinagar police quarters and succumbed to burn injuries, has put the spotlight at the rubbish menace in police residential enclaves. Experts and civic activists have demanded strict action against burning of rubbish and sought streamlining of waste control within the dwellings.

NS Ramakanth, co-founder, Solid Waste Management Round Table, mentioned police quarters within the town, including massive ones just like the KSRP facility in Koramangala and those in Adugodi, Thanisandra, Whitefield and Victoria Layout amongst others, have about 10,000 dwelling devices and generate five tonnes of rubbish on a daily basis. “But maximum of them lack correct waste control. Garbage mounds mendacity uncleared or being burnt and other kinds of mismanagement are not unusual,” he mentioned.

Ramakanth mentioned he had written to IPS officer Praveen Sood when he used to be the police commissioner about resolving the problem in police quarters. “I had proposed segregation of waste and setting up of composting devices in all police quarters. There used to be some initial enthusiasm but it surely fizzled out. Even now I am trying (thru BBMP) to mend a gathering with the highest cop but to no avail,” he added.


Garbage burning prevalent throughout Bengaluru

Seema Sharma of Kasamukta Bellandur, a citizen volunteer crew, mentioned the garbage burning menace isn't limited to police quarters. “Every day, I see at least five to six rubbish piles on fire. It signifies a failure of the waste control machine. We from citizen groups are engaging in doorto-door awareness drives concerning the ill-effects of atmosphere waste on fire,” she added.


Odette Katrak, activist and co-founder of Beautiful Bengaluru, mentioned the girl’s loss of life is just one example of the extremities of the menace. “Burning rubbish has turn out to be a norm and many are not conscious about the ill-effects. There should be a mechanism to assemble rubbish from small distributors,” she added.


Archana Kashyap, some other member of Solid Waste Management Round Table, mentioned burning rubbish is as bad as atmosphere fire to anyone’s property and should draw an identical punishment. “Often, pourakarmikas burn rubbish when they're requested to transparent black spots,” she mentioned.
