Iran calls emergency in flood-threatened southwest province

DUBAI: Iran stated on Saturday it faced an emergency in a southwestern province threatened via flooding and labored to evacuate dozens of villages as forecasters predicted more of the heavy rains that have killed a minimum of 45 people this week, state media reported.

Some 56 villages lying close to the Dez and Karkheh rivers in the oil-rich southwestern province of Khuzestan may must be evacuated as officers launched water from two main dams along the rivers due to forecasts for more rain, the provincial governor, Gholamreza Shariati, informed state tv.

“Some citizens are resisting (evacuation calls) on account of their livestock...and since they’ve skilled identical circumstances in the past,” Shariati stated, adding Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli had agreed to name an emergency in Khuzestan.

Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian, who's accountable for water resources, stated authorities were working round the clock to “control floodwaters and to minimise imaginable harm”.

“It’s estimated that in the next 5 days about three billion cubic metres of water will go with the flow into dam reservoirs in Khuzestan due to rainfall ... 1.eight billion of which (is above capability and) must be launched,” he informed state tv.

The semi-official information agency ISNA quoted Shariati as pronouncing floods may also threaten the provincial capital Ahvaz if the rain is at the absolute best end of forecasts.

In the neighbouring province of Lorestan, a minimum of eight villages and parts of the city of Dorud were being evacuated, the semi-official information agency Fars reported.

Officials have stated the federal government would compensate citizens for flood harm.

At least 45 people were killed this week in flash floods in northern and southern Iran after the heaviest rains recorded in Iran in a minimum of a decade, the state information agency IRNA quoted Health Minister Saeid Namaki as pronouncing.

Western and southwestern parts of the rustic are expected to bear the brunt of the storms in the days ahead.
