KMC plans to set up organic waste compost plants

KOLKATA: After introducing waste segregation in 20 town wards, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation is ready to set up organic waste compost plants around the town. In the first phase, the KMC solid waste management (SWM) division will set up such plants in places where the civic body will be offering segregation amenities to the households generating both organic and inorganic wastes. The compost to be constituted of organic wastes will be utilized by the KMC parks division for growing flowers and plants.



According to plans, the KMC SWM division crew will discuss with each and every family within the designated wards and collect organic wastes like vegetable scrapes, fruit scrapes, cooked meals, paper, timber amongst others. These bio degradable wastes will then be taken to organic waste compost plants for conversion into compost.

Citizens wish to strengthen this initiative. This is a forward-looking transfer and can assist the KMC clear up a part of its waste burden.



The KMC SWM division will even collect dry leaves and grass from town’s streets, parks and gardens and ship the ones to the compost plants for producing compost, said a civic body reliable. “Apart from gathering organic wastes from households, we will be able to additionally collect dry leaves and grass and ship the ones to the compost plants and thus scale back air air pollution,” said a KMC reliable.

According to a KMC reliable, the civic body will set up the first organic waste compost plant at Chetla. “We have offered a waste segregation project close to Ahindra Mancha in Chetla a month ago. The project is running effectively. Now we wish to set up a waste compost plant in Chetla to make use of the segregated organic wastes and convert them into fertilizer. Next within the line will be spaces where the KMC is ready to introduce waste segregation programmes. Some of these spaces come with Sarat Bose Road, Rashbehari Avenue, Southern Avenue, Chittaranjan Avenue, College Street, Behala, Tollygunge and Jadavpur. “In the second one phase we will be able to set up small compost plants within the neighborhood of markets which produce bulk organic wastes,” said a KMC SWM division reliable.
