Matunga Road skywalk safe, says BMC

MUMBAI: Western Railway (WR) has written to the civic authorities on Friday looking for an inspection of the Matunga Road skywalk after a number of footage warning about its safety went viral on social media. But civic officials said it was once inspected and was once safe to be used.

Following the Himalaya FOB crash out of doors CSMT on March 14, which killed six, a number of footage began doing the rounds on social media in regards to the skywalk which connects the railway station FOB. One symbol confirmed a 'separation' in the bridge too.


In the letter to assistant municipal commissioner (G north ward) Ashok Khairnar, WR senior divisional engineer, referring to clippings and public claims, said it wanted inspection, adequate repairs and important motion. "The skywalk needs to be audited and its safety has to be certified by BMC as the FOB is adjacent to the railway station and railway tracks," said the letter. Khairnar said the worry had been raised with the civic bridges department.


BMC bridges department leader engineer Sanjay Darade BMC said it was once a construction joint and the FOB was once safe.
