THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Tholicode Muslim Jama-ath former leader imam Shafeek Al Qasimi (37), who had been on the run after being booked for raping a minor lady, has in spite of everything landed in police custody.
The special investigation workforce probing the case, took Shafeek into custody from Madurai in Tamil Nadu on Thursday morning.
The police have also taken his driver, Fazil, into custody and confiscated the car wherein he was once travelling.
Crime branch DSP (rural district) D Ashokan, the investigating officer in the case, stated that a five-member workforce of shadow cops, led by means of further sub-inspector Shibu, had been looking for the accused in Tamil Nadu.
On Thursday morning, the workforce won explicit data regarding the whereabouts of the accused. Following this, the DSP set out to Madurai.
Shafeek Al Qasimi is accused of raping a 15-year-old lady by means of exploiting the close dating he maintained along with her family. When the imam took the woman to a deserted location near forest at Peppara in his car just about a month ago, a group of Kudumbashree employees, who had been engaged in work there, spotted them and grew suspicious. When they faced him, he sped away in the car. He dropped the woman at her house after which went absconding.
The ladies circulated the pictures they captured on social media and brought the matter to mild.
It took greater than every week for the police to check in a case as they waited for the statements of the woman or her family in this regard.
Initially, the woman in addition to her family were not in a position to give statements towards the Imam. Child Welfare Council intervened and shifted the woman to Nirbhaya safe haven home, the place she was once given counselling. Finally, after every week of delay, the police registered a case towards Shafeek on February 12, with the Jama-ath committee president's as the complainant. The Jama-ath committee had expelled the imam after carrying out an independent probe and finding merit in the allegations levelled by means of the women.
The police had also arrested two brothers and a brother-in-law of the accused on charges of aiding him in escaping and destroying evidence.
Shafeek's arrest will be recorded on Friday.
