NASHIK: For the primary time, assets tax collection by the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has touched Rs 100-crore mark this month.
As consistent with the newest data equipped by the civic frame, its assets collection recently stands at Rs 104 crore, which is over 30% upper than the collection within the corresponding duration of the final fiscal. However, the challenge ahead of the civic frame is to mop up another 46 crore in the remaining 18 days to satisfy its goal of Rs 150 crore set for this fiscal.
The authentic goal for assets tax collection for 2018-19 used to be Rs 253 crore but it used to be slashed to Rs 150 crore following dispute related to the new homes that were identified right through a survey.
"The rise in property tax collection is because of the increase in tax rates. But, we could not start collecting tax from newly-identified properties this fiscal due to objections from the owners about inflated tax bills," NMC sources said.
"It is difficult to say whether we will achieve the target or not. We are trying our best and have sent notices to 484 tax defaulters who have hefty dues, asking them to pay their dues quickly or face seizure of their properties," NMC officers said.
"We have decided to take strict action against the defaulters. In the first phase, we have sent seizure notices to big defaulters, giving an ultimatum of 21 days to clear their dues. We will auction their properties if they fail to pay their dues within the deadline," sources said.
In August final yr, the NMC had taken motion against 120 defaulters for no longer paying total Rs four.5 crore that used to be dues of the former fiscal.
While homes of two defaulters were auctioned at a complete cost of Rs 16.37 lakh, the administration sought approval of the standing committee for taking possession of the remaining 118 homes at a nominal fee of Re 1.
The standing committee of the civic frame has not too long ago given its approval to change the ownership of those homes and document them within the name of the municipal corporation. As consistent with norms, these homes will probably be re-auctioned twice to change ownership within the name of the NMC.
