As many as 70 seed inspectors across the state are set to check up on about nine,600 seed shops within the coming weeks.
While earlier, state agricultural universities have been the one establishments, which produced seeds and distributed to farmers, officers said because of coverage adjustments, many private companies have come into play over the past decade. Private seed manufacturers from different states too will have to enrol their varieties with the seed certification directorate.
“The pressure would help farmers as they might examine the crop traits. Currently, a large number of overnight seed manufacturers were misleading farmers. If the seed varieties are enrolled, this may also be averted,” Mathialagan added.
