Olpad villagers to sit on dharna for closure of cyanide unit

SURAT: Hundreds of other people, together with farmers, from greater than 50 villages in Olpad taluka of Surat will sit on a dharna being arranged by means of Gujarat Khedut Samaj (GKS) to call for closure of Hindustan Chemicals Company Limited for reportedly dumping hazardous chemical in a village near Bharuch.

The dharna shall be arranged outside the gate of the company in Olpad on March 25 to additionally call for motion in opposition to the management for illegally dumping hazardous chemical waste in a farmland in Bharuch.


GKS president Jayesh Patel stated, “Hindustan Chemicals Company manufactures cyanide at its Olpad plant. Many villages in Olpad taluka had been affected due to water pollution caused by means of the unit. An enormous swathe of agriculture land has been destroyed by means of its hazardous chemical. Recently, 3 tankers encumbered with hazardous chemical waste from the company was once caught dumping the fabric at Ummala village in Bharuch. A case has been registered in opposition to the company promoters and house owners by means of the police. Production of cyanide within the manufacturing unit is still occurring. However, Gujarat Pollution Control Board isn't taking motion in opposition to the company.”


Darshan Naik, leader of GKS, stated, “At the dharna programme, we'd call for permanent closure of the cyanide manufacturing company in Olpad. Tens of masses of other people living in within sight villages in Olpad had been affected due to water pollution. Agriculture in masses of hectares of land has been destroyed. GPCB should take motion in opposition to the company house owners.”
