Prakash Mishra joins BJP, likely to be fielded from Cuttack Lok Sabha seat

BHUBANESWAR: Retired IPS officer Prakash Mishra — whose elimination as Odisha DGP in 2014 had snowballed into a significant political controversy — joined the BJP on Sunday. Sources said he is also fielded from Cuttack Lok Sabha seat.
Mishra, who also served as CRPG DG (2014-2016), said, “I had by no means considered joining politics, however was inspired with the operating taste of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Odisha govt had removed Mishra as leader of Odisha Police in July 2014, two years after he took over in July 2012, and slapped a vigilance case on him in September 2014. The Orissa top courtroom quashed the charges in opposition to Mishra in June 2015. The BJP and the Congress had then termed it hounding of a good officer in a fabricated case by the BJD govt.


The Odisha vigilance had alleged that all over his tenure as chairman-cum managing director of Odisha Police Housing and Welfare Corporation between 2006 and 2009, Mishra confirmed undue advantages to subject matter suppliers causing Rs 7.27 crore loss to the state exchequer.


Post retirement, Mishra was appointed one of the two advisers to then Uttarakhand governor KK Paul amid political turmoil in the hill state when President’s rule was imposed in 2016.


Apart from Mishra, Panchanan Das an Indian statistical provider officer, who served as medium, small and micro enterprises secretary, also joined the BJP on Sunday. Earlier, IAS officer Aparajita Sarangi took voluntary retirement and joined the BJP in November ultimate 12 months. She has been fielded from Bhubaneswar LS seat.
