Punjab: Sham marriage gang busted, 5 held

PATIALA: Police have busted a gang of cheats who used to organize sham marriages to blackmail and dupe innocent youths in Fatehgarh Sahib district.

Police have also recovered Rs 15000 from the five accused identified as Sukhwinder Singh alias Sukha, Sohan Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Sarbjit Kaur and Kiranjot Kaur.

Police mentioned that two different individuals of the gang particularly Kuldeep Kaur and Mohar Singh had been absconding.

SSP Amneet Kondal mentioned that the fraud was once unearthed after one Harpreet Singh, a resident of Jhampur village complained to the police that some other people had been blackmailing him on the pretext of registering faux rape or dowry case after his wife left him.


Kondal mentioned that once engaging in an enquiry, police arrested five persons on this regards.


During the initial interrogation, it got here to the sunshine that the gang individuals used to entice younger other people into marriages at nominal charges. They used to remove the bride on some pretext after a couple of days..


Later, they used to blackmail their grooms on one pretext or the other, the police mentioned.


"The accused women who used to become bride and get married play a key role in the crime. We are investigating and hope to nab all such women involved in these cases," SP D Harpal Singh mentioned.
