Less than a kilometer clear of the newly-started stretch of Ahmedabad Metro in Vastral, folks battle to get consuming water and depend on water tankers for his or her day by day wishes. But, there’s downside of lots on the metro backyard.
While folks undergo, the metro coaches are saved squeaky blank the usage of Reverse Osmosis (RO) handled water. About 1,000 litre of RO water is used every week to wash the coaches internally and externally that may quench day by day thirst of 250 persons.
No wonder, voters and water conservationists are crying foul. The 6.5 km stretch of metro educate, between Vastral Gam Station and Apparel Park, was inaugurated on March 4. Along the same stretch, citizens both get infected water or are yet to get water connection.
Why RO water
According to Ahmedabad Metro authorities, the water drawn from borewells is difficult and leaves stain marks on metal frame of coaches if used untreated. A 500 litre in line with hour RO plant has been specially arrange at Apparel Park metro depot to treat water. About 100 litre RO water is used day by day to wash coaches. Once a week, every other 300 litre handled water is used for external cleansing of coaches.
On an average 1,000 litre water is used every week. Over 6,00 litre residual water from the RO plant, left at the back of after treatment, is used for cleansing bogs and metro station. In 20 days since inauguration, 3,000 litre RO water has been used to wash 3 coaches and 1train. Once the Phase 1is absolutely operational, there will be 96 coaches and 32 trains.
Amit Gupta, Chief General Manager (Corporate making plans), Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited, said, “The bore water we draw is difficult. It’s salt content leaves at the back of stain marks on the metal and glass frame of coaches. The same observe is adopted to clean metro coaches all over the rustic.
“We can’t help it because this is a technical requirement. Also, water used is minimal. We use our personal bore and don’t draw from city water supply.”
Conservationists, voters cry foul
Water conservation skilled and Assistant Professor of Earth Sciences at IIT-Gandhinagar Manish Kumar said, “Metro services and products in countries like Japan and France reclaim the waste water after washing. If hardness is a problem for the Ahmedabad Metro, they are able to use 50% of the handled water and 50% Narmada water. Using RO water for laundry is unnecessary.”
He further said, “A possible answer is that the RO water used for laundry can be collected and used to wash bogs at stations. But under no circumstances will have to the RO water be wasted.”
Dinesh Sharma, Leader of Opposition in AMC, said, “Areas like Lambha, Vastral, Sarkhej and Maktampura face both brief supply or poor-quality water supply. Several areas receive water via tankers. The situation will flip worse as summer season advances.”
An Amraiwadi resident instructed Mirror on situation of anonymity, “I've been staying here for the previous 4 years and am yet to get AMC water connection. I've carried out for the connection and approached the officers mentioning the deficient quality of water we receive but all in useless. It’s prison wastage of water and resources if RO water is used to wash trains.”
Abhishek Yadav (21), a resident of Vastral, said, “We receive AMC water from 6 am to eight am. It isn't enough to maintain day by day wishes. It is ironical that we need to reside with restricted water supply, leave apart dream of 24x7 supply being sold to us, and metro is washed with RO water.”
Urvashi, 23, a businesswoman who receives Narmada water 24x7 at her position, said, “I'm shocked to understand that consuming water is used to clean educate. There are folks in the city who don't even have access to water and depend on water tankers. The officers will have to recycle the water used it for cleansing.”
