‘Seriously ill patients should be referred to palliative care’

Coimbatore: In order to lend a hand significantly sick patients and their family members and to forestall suffering, it was vital that the patients have been referred to palliative care team after the analysis of the illness, mentioned Dr Ramachandran, a retired pediatrician from the Air Force. WHO had deemed palliative care as a speciality in 1986, he added.

Ramachandran volunteered to be part of a workshop conducted through Dean Foundation for 40 to 50 body of workers participants of the Mettupalayam Government Hospital on providing hospice and palliative care recently. The body of workers participants have been taught various complications that terminally-ill patients face and the way they could be handled and kept relaxed till demise.


The training was to conform to National Quality Assurance Standards, which require clinic body of workers to be skilled in hospice and palliative care. “Staff participants have been taught about requirement of palliative care for HIV patients, terminally-ill cancer patients, patients with critical organ screw ups and the ones with age-related complications amongst others,” mentioned GH professional Dr Jayaraman, including, “They have been knowledgeable about problems, together with diabetes wounds, mattress sores, pores and skin rashes and more importantly critical ache, confronted through these patients.”


The aim of palliative care or ‘finish of existence care must be neither to lengthen the dying process nor to shorten the lifetime of the patients, however lend a hand them die with dignity and minimal ache and suffering”, the health body of workers told.


The foundation along side State Bank of India’s Anugraha Foundation had began providing palliative and “finish of existence care” for terminally-ill poor patients in and around Karamadai since 2017.
