Thousands march against Duterte on International Women's Day

MANILA: Thousands of girls took to the streets of Manila on Friday in protest against President Rodrigo Duterte's alleged misogyny as an exhibition marking International Women's Day exhibited the garments of Philippine rape victims.

Protesters marched on Malacanang presidential palace chanting against Duterte, who has repeatedly made jokes about rape and mentioned closing yr that when he was once a teen he indecently "touched" the circle of relatives maid.

Presidential aides have stressed that the feedback were mere jokes, no longer policies, and must no longer be taken critically.

But protest chief Joms Salvador of girls's staff Gabriela instructed AFP that Duterte's "misogynistic" statements were "unacceptable, be they jokes or not."

"Law enforcers construe them as policy pronouncements and they embolden criminals," she added.

One woman or kid is now raped in the Philippines in line with hour, a 153 in line with cent build up from the decade earlier than Duterte was once elected president, according to Salvador.

A small staff of policemen monitored the protesters on the palace, numbering around four,000 according to reporters at the scene, earlier than the group marched to a public square in another phase of Manila in the afternoon.

Elsewhere in the city a shopping center exhibition displayed clothes worn by means of women and girls once they suffered "gender-based violence" including rape at house, in school, at work or in different places.

The sponsors mentioned the show, subsidized by means of the United Nations Population Fund local workplace and which has run since closing month, challenges "the idea that women's appearance and behaviour are to blame when they are assaulted".

"The Gateway (shopping mall) exhibit 'don't tell me how to dress' is heart-rending. Seeing it personally make(s) me feel uncomfortable," Twitter person @HAUTEANGELUS posted.

"Terrible, I cried while reading all their stories," @anabemish tweeted with an image of herself on the show off.

"It's a good exhibit. It raises awareness about rape. Women of all ages and backgrounds can become victims and it is infuriating that some people trivialise it," mentioned Salvador, the protest chief.
