BJP candidate held for damaging EVM in Ganjam district

BERHAMPUR: Nilamani Bisoyi, the BJP candidate in Sorada meeting seat was arrested via the police on Thursday night time for allegedly destructive an electronic balloting machine (EVM) in a booth while polling was underway in the second one section. Nilamani was arrested following proceedings from P Ok Jena, returning officer of booth No. 182 at Renti village, underneath Sorada police station limits, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Aska, Suryamani Pradhan, stated. Sorada meeting seat is part of Aska parliamentary constituency in Ganjam district.

Police stated the MLA candidate and his supporters allegedly barged into the booth and destroyed the regulate unit of the EVM while also developing hurdles for poll officials in discharging their duties. Nilamani was arrested underneath different sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act-1984 and Representation of People Act-1951 and 1988, the police stated. He was despatched to Sorada sub prison after his bail plea was rejected via the native courtroom.


Police stated the incident took place about an hour ahead of balloting was intended to be over. At that point 414 out of 539 electorate had exercised their franchise, the police stated.

“The EVM machine was utterly smashed. We have despatched a report from the returning officer to the chief election officer (CEO),” collector-cum-district election officer, Vijay Amruta Kulange, stated. “The Election Commission will now take a final call on whether to reserve a repolling there or not,” he added.


Basant Kumar Bisoi, brother of the MLA candidate, denied the allegation. He claimed the BJD helps had broken the EVM. He stated Nilamani had also tried to hotel a grievance in this regard with the police, however it was not registered.


Basant stated his brother was on his approach to the booth when he came to understand that election rigging was occurring. He and his supporters protested outdoor the booth. “Infact, it was the BJD supporters who broken the machine after they saw Nilamani coming into the booth,” Basant stated, hinting that his brother was framed.


Talking concerning the incident, Sorada police station inspector-in-charge Pravat Sahoo stated, “A case was registered in line with the FIR lodged via the returning officer of the booth.” Asked why Nilamani’s grievance was not registered, Pravat stated, “The police didn't discovered any circumstantial proof relating to his grievance.”


Nilamani’s rival Purna Chandra Swain of the BJD denied allegations that his supporters had been chargeable for the EVM injury, as claimed via Basant. “Polling was occurring peacefully until the BJP candidate entered and started developing disturbance,” stated Purna, a two-time Sorada MLA.
