HUBBALLI: Members of more than a few dalit organisations, activists and progressive thinkers cleaned and purified the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar with milk on the head postoffice, Hubballi, on Monday.
Dalit organisations and others expressed their ire against some BJP leaders including MP Pralhad Joshi who had garlanded the statue of Dr Ambedkar on Ambedkar Jayanti dressed in slippers.
A day after this incident, some dalit organisation contributors sought an apology from BJP leaders for the incident. When there used to be no response, dalit organisations decided to cleanse the statue with milk.
A large number of other people collected and cleaned all the premises through sprinkling water from a water tank. Later, they cleansed the statue through pouring milk on it.
Speaking to TOI, Gurunath Ullikasi, state president, Samata Sena, Hubballi, mentioned BJP leaders themselves had admitted that they have dedicated a mistake through garlanding the statue dressed in slippers. As they did not respond to our demand to apologise for their act, we launched this cleaning drive today.
“Our primary aim of purifying the statue of Dr Ambedkar used to be to not harm or insult any individual, but to ship a strong message that we will have to respect personalities like Dr Ambedkar,” he mentioned.
“We used 101 litres of milk to clean the statue and likewise roped in a tanker of water to clean all the premises of the statue,” Ullikasi added. When contacted BJP spokesperson Hanumanthappa Doddamani, denied the charges levelled through dalit organisations.
