Govt asks colleges to remove plastic from campuses

Bhubaneswar: The upper education department of the state has requested its degree schools and universities to take important steps to take away single-use plastic from the campuses. It has issued the letter ahead of the World Environment Day which is to be celebrated on June 5.
The department in its letter, issued remaining Friday, said the Union ministry of atmosphere, wooded area and climate exchange (MoEFCC) had taken step one to prohibit the usage of single-use plastic pieces within the headquarters of the ministry. The wooded area and atmosphere department of the state has additionally imposed restrictions on the indiscriminate use, manufacture, sale and storage of polythene elevate baggage.

Rajashree Mohanty, additional secretary of the upper education department, advised the registrars of all universities and principals of all authorities and non-government degree schools functioning underneath the department to take steps to take away single-use plastic from their campuses.

“After enforcing the order, the establishments will submit an action report to our department. This is also implemented on a concern basis,” Mohanty said within the letter.

On April 2, the wooded area and atmosphere department of the state had issued letters to other departments including the upper education department to take immediate action towards the usage of single-use plastic in their group or workplaces. The state authorities took this action once you have a letter from the MoEFCC on March 26 concerning the similar.


The ministry advised the state authorities to inspire workers to refuse, scale back, reuse and recycle plastic merchandise every day.


“Prohibit single-use plastic merchandise including water bottles, take-away espresso cups, lunch wrapped in disposable plastic packaging, plastic baggage, disposable meals boxes, plates, boxes made from polystyrene foam and plastic straws. Avoid plastic workplace provides, particularly plastic folders and tapes,” said the ministry in its newest letter.


In October 2 remaining year, the state authorities prohibited the use and sale of sure plastic merchandise in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Rourkela, Sambalpur and Puri. It had ordered that nobody can manufacture, promote, business, import, store, elevate, shipping, use or distribute polythene and single-use plastic in these spaces.
