MUMBAI: Springing a big surprise the selectors on Monday selected to ignore India's emerging megastar Rishabh Pant while pronouncing the squad for the World Cup in England.
WORLD CUP SCHEDULE
Known for his explosive batting, Pant was tipped closely to make it to the workforce, but it was Dinesh Karthik who in the long run won the fight of the second wicket-keeper, thanks to his finishing abilities and better wicket-keeping abilities. As IdealNews had reported, Vijay Shankar was most well-liked over middle-order batsman Ambati Rayudu because of his all-round abilities.
Quizzed on why exactly Karthik was most well-liked over Pant, chief selector and previous India wicket-keeper MSK Prasad stated: "Well, it's definitely a case which we debated at length, and all of us in unison felt that either Pant or DK (Dinesh Karthik) will be coming into playing 11, if (only) Mahi (MS Dhoni) is injured, so at that juncture if it is a crucial match, like a semifinal, wicket-keeping also matters. So, that's the reason why we went ahead with Karthik, otherwise Pant was almost there."
Prasad made it clear that Karthik's finishing abilities won him the fight vs Pant. "One of the wicket-keepers will play only if MS is injured. Under pressure, we have seen Karthik finishing matches," he stated.
It can safely be concluded that Pant's shoddy glove-work in the back of the stumps in the Mohali ODI, the place he gave Australia's Ashton Turner, who smashed an unbeaten 84 now not out off 43 balls to assist Australia chase down 359, a couple of let offs, swung the deal in Karthik's favour. "You can say that ('keeping a work in progress). The situation that was discussed among the selection committee is that one of them will play in the eleven provided MS is injured. Under such a situation, in crunch matches, who is the best guy who can handle pressure? That is the reason which went in favour of Karthik, otherwise Pant is full of talent. There is a lot of time for him. It's unfortunate that he missed out," reasoned the chief selector.
It's obvious that the skilled Karthik's skill to hold his nerves underneath power, as towards Pant's tendency to throw his wicket away on the incorrect time, also weighed in the former's favour.
Shankar over Rayudu
Explaining why Shankar was the most well liked selection ahead of the skilled Rayudu, Prasad stated: "After the Champions Trophy, we've tried quite a few batsmen - Karthik, Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey in the middle order. We did give a few more chances to Rayudu, but Shankar offers three dimensions. Apart from his batting, he can bowl - if the conditions are overcast, he might bowl a bit - and he's a fantastic fielder. That's the thing that went in his favour. Shankar is a batsman who can bowl."
For now, Shankar can be requested to bat on the No. 4 spot, which has been problematic for India in the past. "We are looking at him at No. 4. With Karthik in, and also with Kedar Jadhav, we have plenty of options at No. 4," Prasad stated. If he and Jadhav fail, KL Rahul, who was to begin with picked in the middle-order, too is a candidate to bat there. "We also have a role for KL somewhere in the top-order. To begin with, he is only a reserve opener but if need arises, it will be the team management's call," Prasad stated.
Justifying the decision to pick 3 spinners for the in most cases seamer-friendly conditions in England, Prasad stated: "In the last one and half years, it is these two wrist spinners (Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav), who have won us the games, but there might be situations where you might require an additional all-rounder in the playing XI, which (Ravindra) Jadeja is. In the second part of the tournament, the wickets will be more dry, so Jadeja will be handy. This is the reason why we picked him."
As has been the observe in the past few years, four seamers will trip together with the workforce to bowl to the batsmen all over the World Cup.
"Khaleel's (Ahmed) name was discussed and so was (Navdeep) Saini's. They will be in and around and if the need arises, one of them will be picked," the selection committee chairman knowledgeable. Saini has impressed for RCB in the IPL.
