MUMBAI: The countdown to the shut of Lent started at Palm Sunday April 14. A few church buildings led processions with palm leaves followed by particular mass. Oswald Cardinal Gracias, archbishop of Bombay, called upon Catholics to relieve struggling and injustice.
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week which leads directly to Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, the day of Jesus Christ's crucifixion. Easter might be celebrated April 21.
"On Palm Sunday, palms are blessed and distributed in remembrance of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem," stated Fr Nigel Barrett, spokesman for the archdiocese of Bombay.
Cardinal Gracias had this message for the devoted who collected at Holy Name School in Colaba. At the mass that followed the procession of arms, he stated, "This day is a reminder that much more must be done to alleviate suffering and injustice."
The Centenary Methodist Gujarati Church in Grant Road was decorated with palm leaves. "The message behind this is to welcome Christ in our hearts. Major Dinesh B Macwan was guest speaker," stated pastor Rev. Bharat Solanki.
