TN: Collector visits 85-yr-old first time voter

Eighty-five-year-old Kanniyappan and his family had been in for a wonder when a workforce of officials led by means of Tiruvannamalai district collector Okay S Kandasamy visited them at their small hut at Maruthadu village in Vandavasi taluk on Monday afternoon.

Their downside was they didn't know the way to vote.


They had been freed from bondage on September 22, 2017 from Veerambakkam in the district after being exploited in woodcutting and charcoal making devices in far flung villages in Kancheepuram and Tiruvannamalai for a number of a long time. The handiest politicians they've heard of are MGR, M Karunanidhi and “Amma”.


“We reached their hut to educate them at the vote casting process. We took the EVM set and VVPAT to their space and explained to them how to vote,” Kandasamy told TOI. The members of the family took turns to have a feel of the EVM. The officials spent little over an hour with the family. Kanniyappan searched for some identified birthday party symbols at the EVM. Since it was a style EVM, there was no political birthday party symbol at the system. “We explained to them that the symbols they seek for would be there in the EVM machines on the polling booth,” Kandasamy stated. “When asked why that they had not voted a majority of these years, they stated that they had no voter ID card and nobody told them about vote casting. They stated they had to do paintings to handle youngsters. Hence, by no means afflicted about vote casting,” stated Kandasamy quoting Kanniyappan.


Volunteers of an NGO helped the family download ration card and EPIC (electors’ photo identification card) after producing their liberate certificates that was issued by means of the revenue department. “We won the voter ID two months in the past but didn't know in regards to the vote casting procedure till the officials came house and taught us as of late,” stated Rajendran, a family member.


Kanniyappan’s family isn't on my own. Kuppan and 9 others from three families, who had been rescued from bondage, also are going to vote for the primary time.
