TN govt seeks to hike medical seats by 150

CHENNAI: The Directorate of medical schooling, which is looking ahead to permission to start a brand new medical faculty in Karur and increase UG seats in Madurai and Tirunelveli executive medical colleges for the academic 12 months, is now making contemporary packages for expanding MBBS seats in Coimbatore and Kanyakumari executive medical colleges by 150 for 2020 educational 12 months.


In February, the directorate had submitted its ultimate compliance file after MCI inspections and is expecting the letter of permission to add 345 further seats, together with 95 extra in Madurai executive medical faculty and 100 extra at Tirunelveli medical faculty. “MCIteam thatinspected the campus had identified minor deficiencies. We have rectified them and despatched them the overall file. They may investigate cross-check again or may give us permission in response to the letter,” mentioned director of medical schooling Dr A Edwin Joe.


If the federal government will get permission to start a medical faculty in Karur,it'll take the full number of executive medical colleges within the state to 23. “Our focal point is to increase seats in existing colleges to a minimum of 250 and open new colleges in all districts. For the following educational 12 months,we are planning to increase MBBS seats in Coimbatore to 250 and Kanyakumari to150,” he mentioned. At least 14 extra districts within the state need medical colleges and suggestions for converting district headquarters hospitals in Perambalur, Ooty and Kancheepuram are pending. At least two private establishments, together with Kovai Medical Centre, were given essentiality certificates by the federal government for starting medical colleges. Bharath University and St Peters crew of establishments had additionally applied for essentiality certificates.


As in line with MCI mandate, the state could also be applying for permission to increase PG seats in executive medical colleges. “If now we have post-graduate lessons,we will convert public hospitals into tertiary care centres. So,we will make high quality healthcare out there to all,” Dr Joe mentioned.
