MADURAI: Around 50 remand prisoners in Madurai Central Prison on Tuesday staged a protest to press their calls for together with higher food and basic amenities.
They climbed on a development and hurled stones at the vehicles on the New Jail Road. The protesters threw stones at prison safety workforce too.
When police tried to keep an eye on them, some prisoners harm themselves with sharp objects.
Police blocked visitors motion on the busy New Jail Road which connects Arasaradi with Tamilsangam Road. The vehicles had been diverted through alternative routes.
Additional police workforce had been deployed in the prison. Higher officers together with deputy commissioner of police (law and order) V Sasi Mohan reached the spot.
The protest that started around 3.15pm ended around 5.30pm after police and income officers held talks with the remand prisoners.
