TRICHY: Seven devotees, including four girls have been killed and over 10 injured in stampede at Karuppasamy temple in Muthayampalayam village near Thuraiyur in Trichy district on Sunday. All the injured had been admitted to the government sanatorium in Thuraiyur.
According to police, thousands of devotees had amassed at the temple to provide puja on Chitra Poornima. The incident came about when loads of devotees tried to receive rupee coins - called 'Padi Kasu', from the temple priest, sources mentioned.
There is ritual where temple priest distributes rupee coins, taken out from the hundi, a few of the devotees. It is thought those coins at home deliver prosperity and wealth.
Police mentioned that the injured persons had been admitted to the Thuraiyur sanatorium for remedy and an investigation has been introduced in reference to the tragedy.
