GANGTOK: Nearly 300 yaks have died due to starvation following heavy snow fall in North Sikkim district since late remaining 12 months, an reputable has mentioned.

The North Sikkim district magistrate Raj Yadav showed the demise of around 300 yaks due to starvation throughout heavy snowfall in Mukuthang and Yumthang areas since December 2018.


While carcasses of around 250 yaks have been present in Mukuthang region, 50 yak carcasses have been present in Yumthang recently, Yadav mentioned Saturday.

"It appears that these dead yaks had got nothing to eat during the prolonged period of snowfall since December last year," Yadav mentioned.


The animal husbandry division's clinical workforce has reached Mukuthang, he mentioned.


The workforce carried feed and fodder for the yaks which are nonetheless alive, he mentioned, adding, the yaks can also be tested through the clinical workforce.


The yaks belonged to 15 households in Mukuthang and 10 households in Yumthang, he mentioned.


The affected households will get compensations on the basis of a report that is being prepared through the district administration and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, he added.
