Ejipura’s ‘Saalumarada Thimakka’ has plantedd 73,000+ timber thus far in her husband’s reminiscence
On June 5, 2006, she planted a honge tree near her space in reminiscence of her husband. Today, 13 years later, onWorld Environment Day , the 68-year-old Janet Yegneswaran sits right down to respect the majestic tree, which started her off on a venture that is now impacting the planet. To date, Janet has planted 73,000 saplings in Bengaluru and in different parts of Karnataka. And it all started by means of planting saplings in her neighbourhood.
If all is going neatly, Janet, a resident of Ejipura in south Bengaluru, is all set to reach the milestone of planting 75,000 saplings in a few days.
Janet’s tree-planting venture started in September 2005 when she lost her husband, RS Yegneswaran. “That was the time when Bengaluru was seeing large scale felling of timber for development. Since I felt very passionately for the lack of tree duvet in Bengaluru, my pals advised I do a dharna. But I felt I sought after to do something just a little more productive. I formed theRajanet Yegneswaran Charitable Trust in reminiscence of my husband and decided to absorb planting of saplings within the neighbourhood.”
Janet knew that if she sought after to construct scale, she must do much more than plant saplings in her own lawn. It would mean involving the neighborhood. So she and a few volunteers, went around the neighbourhood asking other folks if they'd be keen to seem after saplings planted at the highway. “The response was lukewarm.
While some agreed, others didn't make stronger me. But I did not surrender,” says Janet.
Green thumb: Luckily for Janet, her revel in of running as a panorama clothier on the Sri Kanteerava Stadium for a few years, stood her in good stead. She had domain expertise in picking the correct of saplings depending at the area in which they have been going to be planted. She started planting saplings in 2006 and continues until as of late. But she has long past past the neighbourhood and forayed into parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu too.
“Many saplings have grown into timber at many places in Bengaluru,’’ she says, proudly. Apart from planting thousands of saplings at areas similar to Krishnarajapura, Pai Layout, Begur, Electronics City, Tataguni, Talgatpura, Cambridge Layout, Koramangala, Jakkur Cross and different puts in Bengaluru, Janet has performed a key position in planting around 5,000 saplings in Tumakuru and Chikaballapur districts.
“We are ready to plant saplings at anywhere around the state if there's a request from someone,” she says.
Presently, preparations are being made to plant 1,000 saplings in Coorg and 1,000 coconut saplings in Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu. “Our mission Thengaja involves planting 1,000 coconut saplings for delta farmers of Thanjavur affected by Cyclone Gaja. We are collaborating with Citizens for Awareness, for this mission.
They have identified 100 deficient families and we will be able to plant 10 coconut saplings for each family,’’ says Janet.
Many corporates like KPMG, Sony, Samsung and Nokia, and so on., have subsidized the planting of saplings at puts decided on by means of them. “We get some cash from corporates to plant saplings within the campus or at decided on places. When residents and farmers need to plant saplings, we do it free of price,” she says.
However, residents have to arrange the pits to plant the saplings that we provide and promise to seem after them. “The purpose is to make the residents take possession of the crops. We only plant saplings if the residents assure us that they're going to water and take care of them,” says Janet.
In the start Janet would buy saplings with her own cash however now, as her initiatives have got larger, she depends upon other folks’s donations. But there’s more than just cash converting fingers. “Some other folks need to plant saplings on their birthdays or special events. A young person approaches us yearly to crops 111 saplings on her birthday. This has been taking place for a few years. Her father provides us Rs 300 according to sapling.”
Janet, who crops a wide variety of timber like Akash mallige, honge, neem and different sorts, also runs a nursery near the BDA Shopping Complex at Domlur. But it is not with out troubles. “There is no water supply for the nursery. It is a 80 X 50 web page which has been given to me by means of a patron. I pay no rent however since there is no water I purchase water for the crops. I would like the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) government to allocate land for the nursery at a suitable location. Former minister Ramalinga Reddy had directed the BBMP government to allot land however it was no longer suitable for a nursery,’’ she says.
As she vegetables the planet one tree at a time, it's worthwhile to take a leaf out of Janet’s book and do the same.
